Guided Fly Fishing TripsA flyfisher can stalk rising fish on this river, which in places is over 100 yards wide, yet offers many wadeable areas. The river with its gravel covered bottom and weed beds, is a gigantic limestone or spring creek. We fish from Holter Dam downstream for 35 miles to the town of Cascade. The selection for a days trip is determined by water conditions, hatches, and preference of the guest. Due to the prolific insect life and consistent hatches, the best time to come can only be narrowed to between March and October. Each month has its own charm and techniques. March/April - As the water warms, the first major hatch of the season is the midge. Although small in size, the quantity of bugs allows larger cluster type flies to be used. The dry fly fishing can rival some of the the warm weather hatches. May/June - By mid May the rainbows have returned from spawning in time to gorge on blue-winged olives. During June, pale evening duns, green drakes and the beginning of the caddis hatch make up the trouts’ menu. July/August - Caddis hatches are in full swing throughout the four months. Tricos will begin about mid-July and continue through August. The large number of insects on the water make the trout group up along current lines to suck in the insects. During times when aquatic insects are not abundant, terrestrials such as hoppers, ants and beetles are effective. September/October - Fall brings the baetis hatch and some caddis. The trout know that winter is on its way, and feed heavily to survive the cold times. The nastier the weather, the more voracious the trout feed, so bring appropriate clothing. Use of streamer patterns during this period can be rewarded with larger than normal trout. Our experienced guides will help you perfect your skills and increase your knowledge. Although our waters challenge the pros, we can tailor a trip to the individual novices’s needs. Our facilities and amenities are available if you prefer to fish on your own or use a guide other than our staff. |
